Indian National Finals Rodeo

Word With A Champ will again cover one of the largest events in Indian Country, the 2019 Indian National Finals Rodeo, INFR.  Indian Rodeo World Championships will be on the line in Las Vegas, at the South Point Events Center.  Support for this program is provided by Wrangler Jeans & Shirts and 4 Bears Casino and Lodge.   We invite you to join NV1 for results and interviews daily.

Day 1: Word With A Champ brings you results and an interview from the 44th annual Indian National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada.  This Wrangler  Fall Sports Special celebrates the first go around winners after two performances of competition. Over 400 contestants representing 50 tribal affiliations battling it out for over $1 million in prize money and the 2019 Indian world championships. We visit with Bo Vocu, Lakota, the president of the INFR, about this event being on the Ride Pass where everyone all over the country can watch it and Saturday night is televised.

Day 2: The 44th Annual Indian National Finals Rodeo concluded round two of four, in the city of lights, Wednesday night in Las Vegas Nevada, October 23, 2019. Over $1 million up for grabs for Indian cowboys and cowgirls from all over the United States and Canada. We visit with 4X time PRCA Wrangler NFR qualifier, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Cole Elshere of South Dakota, about his win in the Saddlebronc riding round two. We also provide results of our contenders in each event.

Day 3:  The Indian National Finals Rodeo began the third of four rounds last night, October 24, 2019 in Las Vegas Nevada. Professional bull riders commentator providing our coverage on ride pass joined us today in an interview. We also have the results from round three in the aggregate in each of our events, as Indian world championships are on the line for all of the men and women’s events. Day 4: Friday night in the city of lights was very entertaining as the 44th Annual Indian National Finals Rodeo fans enjoyed round three of four, October 23, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. We have the results of this round and the aggregate leaders prior to championship Saturday night at the South Point Casino. We also speak to Chancy Wilson about an award winning horse, Shrek, with his Muddy Creek ProRodeo LLC of South Dakota. Day 5: The 44th Annual Indian National Finals Rodeo concluded Saturday night, October 26, 2019 at the South Point Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. INFR World Champions were crowned we have the results and in each respective event. Approximately four dozen tribal affiliation were represented with 400 contestants vying for the titles and $1 million in prize money. We also visit with NFR qualifier and Ride Pass commentator, Coleman Proctor of the Cherokee Nation.

Horse Nation Indian Relay Council “Championship of Champions”

Walla Walla, WA. – The 5th Annual Championship of Champions is held in Walla Walla, Washington at the Walla Walla Fairgrounds Sept. 20-22, 2019. At this year’s Championship of Champions, more than 36 elite teams representing 13 Indian Nations will have qualified to compete at the 2019 Finals for Big money on Friday and Saturday leading up to a $50,000 purse on Sunday.

A combination of the World Series and Super Bowl for Indian Horse Relay. As America’s oldest known competition, Indian Relay is exploding onto the scene as the world’s newest and most exciting extreme sport! The Championships are the culmination of over 18 grueling competitions sanctioned by the Horse Nation Indian Relay Council, held this season between Native Americans and First Nations of Canada athletes.

The 2019 Championship of Champions will be the largest gathering to ever witness Indian Horse Relay, with the best inter-tribal competition ever assembled. The Horse Nation Indian Relay Council (HNIRC) was founded to promote Indian Relay, horsemanship and safety. The vision of the teams and the entire membership is for relay to become a viable cultural and economic entity on the reservations.  Word with a Champ‘s coverage of this event is supported by Wrangler

Day 1: The Horse Nations Indian Relay Council, Championship of Champions, is hosted this week in Walla Walla, Washington, for the second year in a row. President of the HNIRC, Oglala Lakota Calvin Ghostbear, is our guest this 1st of four, Wrangler Fall Sport Specials September 20-23, 2019.

The excitement is building towards championship Sunday afternoon already. After a season of competition, vying for spots for preliminary heat races the first two days of qualifying races, it all comes down to three laps with dozens of horses and riders on the front straightaway, for the season and title of the sport. This is shaping up to be the largest gathering in the history of America’s first extreme sport. One that is well over two centuries old and part of the traditional American Indian and First Nations way of life, when the great horse nations, once again, come together, a very exciting event.

Day 2: The Championship of Champions, Indian relay horse races started last night in Walla Walla, Washington.  And enthusiastic crowd enjoyed a 13 race ticket with all the thrills and spills involved. We look forward to doubling our attendance from last year by championship Sunday afternoon. We have results from day one of three of the event sanction by the Horse Nations Indian Relay Council.

Day 4: The Colville Tribe of Washington was in the winner circle at the Championship of Champions Indian relay horse races in Walla Walla,Washington. It is our privilege to provide the results from a championship Sunday afternoon and interview with a talented winning jockey Scotty Abrahamsson of Abrahamsson Relay.

Definition of Resilience highlights the dynamic voices of  Native American hip-hop MCs. INDIGEFI host Alexis Sallee travels to document Native American hip-hop MCs contribution to modern music. From Minnesota to Alaska, eight rappers bring insight and emotional rawness in exploring disconnection and reconnection to Native culture. Their personal stories cover addiction, identity, boarding schools, and generational trauma. Their powerful lyrical and artistic expression works to uplift their communities and inspire youth. Each half hour follows two artists who share their story and Indigenous history.

Preserving language, battling stereotypes, and rising up from trauma, we follow Giizhigookwe and Thomas X as they give back to their communities. Taking lessons from elders, these two MCs from Northern Minnesota use their music to empower the next generation.

“Identity” featuring Mic Jordan and Tall Paul
Mic Jordan and Tall Paul share personal stories around identity. We find out how, despite growing up without a parental figure, struggling with alcohol or dealing with anxiety, they became the role models they wanted as kids.

Visiting the local hip-hop community in Oklahoma and the Suquamish reservation in Washington, Quese IMC and Calina Lawrence show us what happens when we come together as a People.

America’s attempt to separate Native children from their families didn’t end with boarding schools. In the decades after World War II, the U.S. government created the Indian Adoption Project, an effort designed to place Native kids with white parents. In this one-hour documentary, producer Melissa Olson explores the personal and historical impact of this policy. Her Ojibwe mother, Judy Olson, was raised by a white family. So were the mothers of several friends. The emotional impact of the Indian Adoption Project — and similar state projects — continues today. Produced by Melissa Olson and Ryan Katz. Testimonies: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

Testimonies zeros in on the problem of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. It’s a problem that burst into public awareness across the Upper Midwest in the summer of 2017. That’s when a young indigenous woman who was eight months pregnant was found murdered near Fargo, North Dakota. But the issue isn’t new news within tribal communities. Rather it’s an ongoing problem that has deep roots.

In this episode, you’ll hear a round table discussion with producer and host, Meg Lindholm, and three guests.

Chalsey Snyder is an enrolled member of the MHA Nation on the Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota. She is a mother and an author of “Loren’s Law,” the first anti-human trafficking law in Indian Country. She also serves on the Native American Commission in Fargo, North Dakota.

Dr. Donald Warne is a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe from Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He also served as Chair of the Department of Public Health at North Dakota State University which offers the only MPH in Native health in the U.S. Currently he is Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of North Dakota and the Director of Indians into Medicine program at UND’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Whitney Fear is a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe from Pine Ridge, South Dakota. She is a nurse for Homeless Health Services at Family HealthCare in Fargo and she is a mother of twins. She also serves on the Native American Commission in Fargo, North Dakota.

Our Voices Will Be Heard is a 59-min radio theater adaptation of a play about a powerful mother- daughter journey that reveals how generations face the choice of continuing to perpetuate—or disrupt—family violence. Through the lens of fiction, and the palette of Alaska Native Storytelling, the playwright tells the true story of her mother’s strength against impossible pressure. Our Voices Will Be Heard weaves together legend and truth in a fierce call for healing and forgiveness.

Our Voices Will Be Heard was written by Vera Starbard who is Tlingit and Dena’ina, originally from Southeast Alaska, and now resides in Anchorage, Alaska. She is the Editor of First Alaskans Magazine, and Playwright-in-Residence at Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska.

The play was directed by Larissa FastHorse who is a Lakota playwright, choreographer, and director, based in Santa Monica, California. She has written and produced numerous award-winning plays, and is a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 2018

The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the sport’s richest and most prestigious rodeo, showcases the world’s best contestants and stock. Indian cowboys, defending World Champion, Navajo, Erich Rogers, recent World Champion Aaron Tsinigine, the legend Derrick Begay and Oglala Lakota, Shane O’Connell are our contingency for the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association 2018 World Titles. There is a history of Indian cowboys and cowgirls winning lots of cash in Vegas. Word With a Champ’s Randy Taylor brings us daily coverage of this year’s WNFR on Native Voice One, December 7- 16, 2018.

The 10-day championship event, held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas every December, has enjoyed sold-out attendance for 33 years. In 2017, 168,952 fans cheered 119 of rodeo’s superstars at the 59th “Super Bowl” of rodeo, in which over $10 million was paid out to contestants who won or placed in rounds.

Indian contestants will be featured win, lose or draw in our daily reports including interviews with ProRodeos favorite stars. Each of the 10 rounds pay $26,230 to win and the best on 10 will earn $67,269, it is an exciting time for our Native American and First Nation Canadian contestants.

Native Vote 2018: Election Night Live!  
This is a historic election, where voters could elect the first Native American woman to the Congress or as a state governor. Indian Country Today, FNX / First Nations Experience, and Native Voice One will stream a live coast-to-coast newscast for five hours on election day, Tuesday, November 6. Anchors Antonia Gonzales, Mark Trahant, and correspondents from across the country will report the latest results for the record number of Native Americans running for office. Coverage begins at 6 pm Pacific / 9 pm Eastern.
 
Native Vote 2018: Election Results
Find out who wins in an hour long special report from FNX / First Nation Experience, Native Voice One, and Indian Country Today. This hour will report the results from the hundred plus Native candidates running from Maine to Alaska.
