Horse Nation Indian Relay Council “Championship of Champions”

Walla Walla, WA. – The 5th Annual Championship of Champions is held in Walla Walla, Washington at the Walla Walla Fairgrounds Sept. 20-22, 2019. At this year’s Championship of Champions, more than 36 elite teams representing 13 Indian Nations will have qualified to compete at the 2019 Finals for Big money on Friday and Saturday leading up to a $50,000 purse on Sunday.

A combination of the World Series and Super Bowl for Indian Horse Relay. As America’s oldest known competition, Indian Relay is exploding onto the scene as the world’s newest and most exciting extreme sport! The Championships are the culmination of over 18 grueling competitions sanctioned by the Horse Nation Indian Relay Council, held this season between Native Americans and First Nations of Canada athletes.

The 2019 Championship of Champions will be the largest gathering to ever witness Indian Horse Relay, with the best inter-tribal competition ever assembled. The Horse Nation Indian Relay Council (HNIRC) was founded to promote Indian Relay, horsemanship and safety. Day 1: The Horse Nations Indian Relay Council, Championship of Champions, is hosted this week in Walla Walla, Washington, for the second year in a row. President of the HNIRC, Oglala Lakota Calvin Ghostbear, is our guest this 1st of four, Wrangler Fall Sport Specials September 20-23, 2019.

The excitement is building towards championship Sunday afternoon already. After a season of competition, vying for spots for preliminary heat races the first two days of qualifying races, it all comes down to three laps with dozens of horses and riders on the front straightaway, for the season and title of the sport. This is shaping up to be the largest gathering in the history of America’s first extreme sport. One that is well over two centuries old and part of the traditional American Indian and First Nations way of life, when the great horse nations, once again, come together, a very exciting event.

Day 2: The Championship of Champions, Indian relay horse races started last night in Walla Walla, Washington.  And enthusiastic crowd enjoyed a 13 race ticket with all the thrills and spills involved. We look forward to doubling our attendance from last year by championship Sunday afternoon. We have results from day one of three of the event sanction by the Horse Nations Indian Relay Council.

America’s attempt to separate Native children from their families didn’t end with boarding schools. In the decades after World War II, the U.S. government created the Indian Adoption Project, an effort designed to place Native kids with white parents. In this one-hour documentary, producer Melissa Olson explores the personal and historical impact of this policy. Her Ojibwe mother, Judy Olson, was raised by a white family. Testimonies: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

Testimonies zeros in on the problem of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. It’s a problem that burst into public awareness across the Upper Midwest in the summer of 2017. That’s when a young indigenous woman who was eight months pregnant was found murdered near Fargo, North Dakota. But the issue isn’t new news within tribal communities. Rather it’s an ongoing problem that has deep roots.

In this episode, you’ll hear a round table discussion with producer and host, Meg Lindholm, and three guests.

Chalsey Snyder is an enrolled member of the MHA Nation on the Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota. She is a mother and an author of “Loren’s Law,” the first anti-human trafficking law in Indian Country. She also serves on the Native American Commission in Fargo, North Dakota.

Dr. Donald Warne is a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe from Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He also served as Chair of the Department of Public Health at North Dakota State University which offers the only MPH in Native health in the U.S. Currently he is Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of North Dakota and the Director of Indians into Medicine program at UND’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Whitney Fear is a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe from Pine Ridge, South Dakota. She is a nurse for Homeless Health Services at Family HealthCare in Fargo and she is a mother of twins. She also serves on the Native American Commission in Fargo, North Dakota.

Our Voices Will Be Heard is a 59-min radio theater adaptation of a play about a powerful mother- daughter journey that reveals how generations face the choice of continuing to perpetuate—or disrupt—family violence. Through the lens of fiction, and the palette of Alaska Native Storytelling, the playwright tells the true story of her mother’s strength against impossible pressure. Our Voices Will Be Heard weaves together legend and truth in a fierce call for healing and forgiveness.

Our Voices Will Be Heard was written by Vera Starbard who is Tlingit and Dena’ina, originally from Southeast Alaska, and now resides in Anchorage, Alaska. She is the Editor of First Alaskans Magazine, and Playwright-in-Residence at Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska.

The play was directed by Larissa FastHorse who is a Lakota playwright, choreographer, and director, based in Santa Monica, California. She has written and produced numerous award-winning plays, and is a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

CBC’s Unreserved on Native Voice One

Starting February 4th 2019, Native Voice One (NV1), the Native American Radio Network, will begin distribution of Unreserved, produced by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Through this partnership, Unreserved will heard for the first time on public radio stations throughout the United States.

NV1 looks forward to adding Unreserved to its menu of programs that enlighten and inform the general public about Indigenous news, culture, history, music, events, and modern life. “We are so pleased to have Unreserved added to the catalog of high quality programming by Indigenous producers and hosts. Having Unreserved available to communities will provide an enriched perspective that will benefit stations and listeners,” says NV1 Network Manager Bob Petersen.

Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 2018

The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the sport’s richest and most prestigious rodeo, showcases the world’s best contestants and stock. Indian cowboys, defending World Champion, Navajo, Erich Rogers, recent World Champion Aaron Tsinigine, the legend Derrick Begay and Oglala Lakota, Shane O’Connell are our contingency for the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association 2018 World Titles. There is a history of Indian cowboys and cowgirls winning lots of cash in Vegas. Word With a Champ’s Randy Taylor brings us daily coverage of this year’s WNFR on Native Voice One, December 7- 16, 2018.

The 10-day championship event, held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas every December, has enjoyed sold-out attendance for 33 years. In 2017, 168,952 fans cheered 119 of rodeo’s superstars at the 59th “Super Bowl” of rodeo, in which over $10 million was paid out to contestants who won or placed in rounds.

Indian contestants will be featured win, lose or draw in our daily reports including interviews with ProRodeos favorite stars. Each of the 10 rounds pay $26,230 to win and the best on 10 will earn $67,269, it is an exciting time for our Native American and First Nation Canadian contestants.

Native Voice One Has Robust Plans for 2019

As part of its mission to support, grow and expand the public broadcasting universe, the PRSS provides “in-kind” services to help producer groups that serve populations that may be under-represented.

These services provide discounted rates for content delivery and for use of ContentDepot as a way to ensure that the public airwaves speak to a more diverse listenership. At this time, The African American Public Radio Consortium, Radio Bilingue, and Native Voice One are recipients of these in-kind services.

This month, EsPRSSo speaks with Bob Petersen, Network Manager for Native Voice One, about how his network is growing in leaps and bounds, both in the volume of programming available as well as its geographical reach across the country.

Can you provide an overall summary of NV1, what you do, what your mission is, some highlights of 2018, and what’s on the horizon?

Bob Petersen, NV1 Network Manager

Quyana (‘thank you’ in Yup’ik) for the invitation and the opportunity to share with your audience a little about Native Voice One (NV1); NV1 is an international public radio program distribution company owned by Koahnic Broadcast Corp. We have offices in Anchorage, AK, and Albuquerque, NM, and have contracted staff in Austin, TX.

Currently, we distribute 11 regularly scheduled Native American produced programs that are carried on over 190 stations throughout North America, and in Guam, to Sydney, Australia. We also have over a dozen program specials available for broadcast, and playing on our 24/7 web stream. Our mission is to provide a Native American perspective, philosophy, and presence through radio programs for broadcast on terrestrial and digital audio platforms.

2018 has been a banner year. We are coming off of the historic Election-Night coverage with Indian Country Today and First Nations Experience (FNX), which was hosted by National Native News host Antonia Gonzales (NAVAJO) and the host of Trahant Reports, Mark Trahant (SHOSHONE-BANNOCK).

National Native News (NNN), which has been on the air since 1987, continues to provide award-winning coverage of news and events that affect Indian Country. This year, NNN won several Native American Journalism Awards (NAJA) including first place for news story: ‘Advocates to Trump: Racial slur harmful to Native women.’

Native America Calling (NAC) won the NAJA first place in the category of Radio – General Excellence for their episode on ‘Exposing sex trafficking, From Charlottesville to Native America, Keeping reservations dry’. NAC is hosted by Tara Gatewood (ISLETA).

The program formally called ‘Earthsongs’ rebranded this year as ‘INDIGEFI‘. INDIGEFI premiered ‘Definition of Resilience‘ a four episode radio and video documentary series highlighting the dynamic stories of Native American hip-hop MCs. INDIGEFI is hosted by Alexis Sallee (INUPIAQ/MEXICAN AMERICAN).

In 2019, we look forward to distributing Canada Broadcast Corporation’s program ‘Unreserved‘ as we look to add content on our stream and podcast platform to help up and coming producers/hosts hone their broadcast skills for terrestrial broadcast.

Are there any particular points in your history that were significant milestones or achievements?

Since 2006, Native Voice One has been the nation’s only public radio distribution company featuring Native American programming. Each day that NV1 has a program aired is a significant milestone. Through our service listeners hear broadcasts with the Native American perspective, philosophy, and presence. We bring broadcasts of events like: Gathering of Nations, Alaska Federation of Natives conference, and the Indian National Finals Rodeo. We also provide coverage of Native American issues like the Standing Rock protests, and the 2018 midterm elections.

Our social media presence has really begun to catch hold from our coverage of the 2018 Alaska Federation of Natives Convention. We are looking to capitalize on our reach and increase engagement with our friends on Facebook.

What programs are currently in the pipeline that stations may want to broadcast this fall/winter/next year?

In December we will distribute several specials:

The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, hosted by Randy Taylor (CHEROKEE). Randy brings us the action from the Top 15 contestants in the standard rodeo events – bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping (headers and heelers), saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, WPRA barrel racing and bull riding.

A 50-min special: ‘Testimonies: Missing, Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls‘ zeros in on the problem of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

A 59-min radio theater adaptation of a play about a powerful mother- daughter journey that reveals how generations face the choice of continuing to perpetuate – or disrupt – family violence: ‘Our Voices Will Be Heard.’

In 2019 we will be adding to our regular distribution catalog with ‘Unreserved’ from Canadian Broadcast Corporation. We are currently in talks to add up to three more regular programs for terrestrial distribution.

Is there a particular kind of program that NV1 pursues? Are there particular focuses you specialize in?

We seek to add programs that highlight the Native American perspective, philosophy, and presence in current events, art, entertainment, sports, human interest and civic affairs with our fellow Americans. Native America is still a greatly untapped source for radio broadcast content.

It is my conviction that the Native voice is an essential ingredient to help heal our Nation, and cure the divisiveness that is often propagated through media. We continually seek programs that provide Indigenous insight.

How have the ‘in-kind’ services offered by NPR Distribution benefited your organization?

NPR Distribution is our backbone. Without having the network for stations to access the programs, without the fully discounted service of one full-time PRSS standard channel and uplink, NV1 would find it prohibitively expensive to provide Native programming. PRSS allows NV1 to distribute nearly 2,000 hours of programming annually.

NV1 relies on our relationship with PRSS to support producers who are contributing Native cultural programming and would otherwise not be able to afford the use of PRSS ContentDepot for national distribution. This service is especially valuable to the majority of our producers who do not have significant underwriting or grant support. They volunteer their time and pay for their production costs out of pocket. The in-kind PRSS service allows producers to provide high quality Native programming to stations and reach a much larger national audience.

NPR Distribution offers these in-kind services to several groups that provide a voice to the airwaves that otherwise might not be heard. How important do you think this is?

Michael R. Roberts (Tlingit), president and CEO of First Nations Development Institute and co-director of ‘Reclaiming Native Truth‘ said: “Native Americans and their communities are blocked from reaching their full potential by harmful stereotypes, misperceptions, and lack of awareness. This cultural indifference and injustice pervades our entire country, from the media and entertainment industry to thought leaders and pop culture overall.”

A large portion of the North American population are under-informed or misinformed about Native American people, history, and modern day issues, due to a lack of representation in pop culture, K-12 education, and the media. A recent survey by the Reclaiming Native Truth project found that 40% of respondents didn’t think Native Americans still exist.

Invisibility and erasure from the American consciousness leads to an inadvertent bias. Without an understanding or awareness of Native American issues, people are less likely to support certain rights and social justice issues. NV1 aims to broadcast the Native voice with programming designed to reach an audience inclusive of all Americans that enlightens, educates, and entertains listeners to help them feel more connected and build empathy towards fellow citizens.

A significant portion of our affiliation base is made up of small rural, reservation-based or low-power FM stations that do not have the revenue to support high programming costs. We work individually with each station to provide an affordable service that meets each station’s needs and budget. In many instances, we’ve reduced or waived our program fees for stations in hardship situations, which are in the most need of programming and technical support.

Has ContentDepot been an asset for your group among those who use it?

Yes. “For a network that needs to manage several different programs, ContentDepot has made it very user friendly and easy to train producers to upload. The staff of ContentDepot is friendly, knowledgeable and ensure that all concerns are addressed.” Nola Daves Moses, NV1 Distribution Director.

NV1 stream outage due to Anchorage earthquake

The NV1 web stream has been knocked out by the earthquake that rocked Anchorage on Friday, November 30, 2018. The Anchorage home of Koahnic Broadcast Corporation, KNBA, and NV1 on the 4th floor of the Cook Inlet Tribal Council building has suffered significant damage. Our web steam is “off the air,” but we are setting up an alternate site to deliver “regular” programming soon!

Reconnecting with a Healthy Lifestyle is a special broadcast from National Native News with a focus on traditional foods to improve the health and wellness of Native people. We hear from tribal leaders, health advocates and grassroots coalition members who are taking on wellness initiatives, promoting food sovereignty programs to increase access to fresh produce, and are seeking new ways to improve the overall health of their communities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Native Americans and Alaska Natives are more likely to report their health is fair or poor compared to other groups, particularly Caucasians. Rates of diabetes, suicide and chronic illnesses are often higher in Native communities. Indigenous people across the United States are taking control of their mental and physical health using both traditional methods and Western medicine.

From urban gardens and tribal seed banks, to Indigenous smartphone apps to sharing traditional recipes, Native people are reconnecting to their traditions and culture to address disease and encourage others to live a holistic way of life.

Alaska Water Wars: Stories from Bristol Bay

Alaska’s Water Wars: Stories from Bristol Bay is a timely, five-minute, 5-part series focused on the proposed Pebble Mine near Alaska’s Bristol Bay.

Alaska’s Bristol Bay is home to one of the most valuable salmon fisheries in the world. It’s also a place where a company has been wanting to build an open-pit copper and gold mine for years. The Obama administration proposed limits for Pebble Mine to protect water. President Donald Trump’s EPA could roll those back and make the mine a reality. Complicating matters, the Alaska Native people who live there are divided on whether the mine should go ahead.

Alaska Water Wars is a multimedia project that shares the stories of Alaska Native people as they navigate the benefits and risks posed by new natural resource development projects coming to their regions.

This series about the Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay comes to us from Independent producer Daysha Eaton in Anchorage, Alaska. Financial support for this reporting was provided by the Alaska Humanities Forum and KNBA public radio.

Part 1: President Donald Trump’s EPA may make it easier for a Canadian mining company to get permits it needs to build a large copper and gold mine on top of wetlands that feed one of the world’s richest salmon fisheries in Southwest Alaska. But some local and indigenous people are resisting the project because of concerns it could ruin their fishing and way of life. At the center of it all is water.

Part 2: The Canadian mining company is looking for new investors and says it plans to apply for permits to build a copper and gold mine in the Bristol Bay region soon. But some local and indigenous people say the EPA was right to put limitations on the mine, under the Obama administration. Tribes connected to commercial fisheries in particular worry that allowing the mine to get a foothold in the area could spell disaster.

Part 3: Thousands of local and indigenous people in the Bristol Bay region are divided on the issue of the proposed Pebble Mine. While commercial fishing towns are united against mining, villages closer to the mine site are interested in the economic development it could bring. However, many also worry that the industry could pollute their pristine rivers as well as change their communities beyond recognition.

Part 4: Despite concerns about possible impacts to water quality, some local and indigenous communities very close to the proposed Pebble Mine say they want the jobs that mining could bring. Those communities don’t benefit as much from the commercial fishing industry and some say they want employment that will allow them to stay in their Native villages with a higher standard of living.

Part 5: The mining company insists that its new plan takes every precaution to protect water, but many local and indigenous people who live in villages midway between the proposed mine and Bristol Bay are skeptical. They rely heavily on subsistence salmon fishing for food and say the water that’s at risk is a cultural resource with which they’re not willing to gamble. They want the EPA to stick with limits it proposed on mining in 2014 and some are vowing to fight the mine no matter what.
