Native America Calling: Thursday, May 28, 2015 – Sanitation Problems In Native America
According to the Rural Community Assistance Partnership, nearly one in 20 households in Native America does not have complete indoor plumbing. In Alaska, the group estimates that 3,300 households do not have pipe water or sewer systems. Lack of modern sanitation can cause serious health problems like pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses, as well as skin lesions. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation issued a challenge to teams of professionals to make cost-efficient water and sewer systems for Alaska Native villages in need. How can communities make sure that everyone in Native America has their sanitation needs met? Do tribes have the resources to help tribal members get the pipe water and sewer systems?
